Melanie and Mike – Rainy Engagement Session at Minooka Park and Paradise Springs

October 9, 2019

Up until the last few weeks, I had never really shot anything much in the rain. I have pretty much always lucked out with my weddings and having clear skies, at least at moments throughout the day, and typically for regular sessions if it’s raining, we reschedule. Well, we had Melanie and Mike’s engagement session scheduled for months, so when rain came up in the forecast we all got a little nervous about what to do. They were coming all the way up from Illinois for their session and our schedules are all so busy that it was hard to coordinate another time, so we just decided to embrace it, have fun, and just go for it! And oh my, am I glad we did!!

We moved our session up way earlier than the intended sunset time because I knew with the rain, there wasn’t going to be a sunset. Earlier in the day is usually a little harsh with the sun, but during a day filled with rain, overcast skies were on our side! I met them at Minooka Park and it was POURING. In the car I set my gear, put on my poncho, opened my umbrella, and away we went! I struggled a bit at first with rain on my lens (I should’ve had a lens hood on, duh!) but got it figured out after a bit of time. At times, we just threw the umbrellas down and I simply photographed Melanie and Mike while they danced in the rain!

I absolutely had a BLAST and I hope you guys did too! Thank you both for going along with my crazy ideas and side trips on the way to Paradise Springs… like stopping by the corn field and the birch tree forest! Those are some of my favorite pictures from the session so I am so glad we stopped! I can’t wait to celebrate you both at your wedding next September!

xoxo,
Nikki
